Because the furnace technician found out that it wasn't the sensor that was bad, but something in the control board the sensor reports to. Oh, and because somehow the whole furnace shut down. So no heat at all. Except for a couple of electric heaters so no one actually froze to death. Lucky it wasn't too cold last night.

And I have discovered that a futon mattress on the floor and an electric blanket gave me just about the best night's sleep I've had in ages. Must investigate further. Meanwhile, time to shop around for a new heating company.

Well the heat is on. But the problem is not truly fixed. The technician swapped out the sensor and that didn't help. He swapped out the control board and that didn't help. He can't figure it out so he jury rigged something so that the heat will run using the return temperature sensor plugged into the supply sensor connection and adjusting the boiler temperature so as not to overheat things... I guess that'll work for a bit. It's working so far but still sounds a bit hinky to me. They need to consult with the manufacturer's reps to figure out what's going wrong. And the fun continues - but at least not shivering for now. And hot showers become possible.
