End of an Era
Feb. 20th, 2010 08:00 amWell, sort of. Those of you familiar with the University of New Hampshire and/or the town of Durham itself might recall the New England Center. It's a hotel/conference center owned by the university. Well it hasn't been profitable in recent years and the decision has been made to shut it down.
Oh, they aren't going to let the building go to waste. It's in pretty good shape, so they are going to use it as a dormitory. Good timing too. since they are closing one of the smaller dorms to use as offices. Still, it's a net gain in beds, which UNH is still terribly short on.
And because the "new" dorm is out behind my dining hall, the Powers That Be expect our business to increase. We will, as of this fall, once again serve meals on Fridays. This will mean no, or fewer, extended shifts. Most of us work four ten hour days right now. I personally work four nine hour days and come in on Friday for four hours to do inventory. While I will be happy to go back to eight hour days, I will miss having that short day with no one around so that I can just get my inventory done without constant interruptions. It has worked pretty well. "What ya gains on the swings, ya loses on the roundabouts."
