I think if folks hadn't been so worried about the economy and personal freedom, a few solid months of lockdown would have let us control this thing at the beginning and we'd be back to (an adjusted) normal.

comments

I'm hoping everyone is well and managing life these days. I'm still working at UNH Dining, doing my usual job even though we're only serving about 250 meals per day and that's likely to go down as the students who couldn't go home for Spring Break find ways off campus and more staff and faculty work remotely.
The latest word I've gotten is that they hope to keep people in Dining working through the end of the semester. Lots of cleaning and projects to do and helping out other departments as needful. This despite the fact that they were talking layoffs at UNH before the crisis hit. So we'll see.
Well, the moving is actually finished, but the cleanup is not. <sarcasm>Fortunately</sarcasm> the signing on the house got delayed. It was supposed to be today but someone on the other side forgot to touch second base so legalities. That's what they get for complicating things (forming an LLC to buy my half of the duplex. They are going to rent out both sides, having moved elsewhere already.)

Anyway, it gives me more time to get all of my junk out and maybe manage to leave the place "broom clean" as specified in the sales agreement.
Tomorrow, I am moving out of this house. Mind you, I haven't slept here all week. Staying at my girlfriend's house, pet-sitting while she spends Christmas with her brother and sister down in Georgia. Actually spent most of the daylight hours in Somersworth, packing and such. Tomorrow, I bring the U-haul to move those things I can't manage without. Bed, UNH rocking chair, UNH lamp, UNH clock and whatever incidentals I haven't already moved. If all goes to plan, we sign the last paperwork in 8 days, call the junk haulers for the last pile and start a new life in a new home. With a truly wonderful woman.
Moving Day, for me, is still a couple of weeks away. Sometime between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Meanwhile, I have to clear out 30 years worth of family stuff left behind as folks moved out one by one. The kids have all claimed what they want. Nothing left but to call up the junk haulers.
Good morning folks.
No I'm not moving today. My son is. Or he moved yesterday. Most of his stuff went over yesterday. Just smaller stuff he can take in his car left to go. And then I will be alone for the first time since my brief stay in Nashua back in '84.
But that won't last long as I'm planning to move in with my sweetheart next month as I'm selling my place to my neighbors. Twenty three years here. The longest I've stayed in one place.
So Alex will be in Farmington and I'll be in Raymond and none of the family will be in the New Hampshire Seacoast for the first time since about 1955.
End of an era.

comments

Odd thoughts pop into my head now and then. Twisted cultural references with wordplay or outright puns drift through my consciousness and sometimes get stuck. When I think they are obvious, I search for them on the internet to see who has thought of them before. Usually, I find plenty of people have gotten there before me, as with yesterday's "White Walker, Texas Ranger". Sometimes not so much. I found only one hit for "Emperor Velveteen" and that was an obscure rock group named Emperor Velveteen's Army.

I got only one hit on this morning's bit of madness, but think it would make a great line in a song. For example, "I finally met someone who gave a flying fuck and we joined the mile high club together". Really, that one should have gotten millions of hits. I must be doing my searches wrong.

comments

It's that time of the year again. End of the school year at UNH. We need to empty the coolers at the dining hall since we'll be closed for three months. We're actually doing pretty good at that. So good that I'm not sure we'll have anything to feed the students for the three more days we're open.

In keeping with this empty-it-all out theme, my deliveries have been very small all week. With the exception of Wednesdays I have an assistant for four hours a day. It's been a challenge finding ways to keep myself busy, let alone someone else.

I'm hoping to only work part time this summer.
Yesterday I thought I'd get in a little time at the gym. For extra, I was going to bike there and back. On the way there, I swung by the cemetery to check in with mom, dad and nephew. Shortly after leaving the cemetery, the rear tire on my bike blew out. BANG! Much suckitude. So instead of going to the gym for exercise, I got to walk my bike home. Only a few miles, but I hadn't planned on being out in the sun for a hour or more and since my recent surgery I'm much more aware of the sun. So on the walk home, I dropped in to Target to pick up a wide-brimmed hat ( a boonie hat actually ) and a new tube for my bike. Got home having exercised my legs, lungs and heart adequately and avoided sunburn. Such was my Sunday.

comments

Hello and Happy Easter to those who celebrate in some fashion. Winter seems to be finally behind us. Yesterday, I took the winter equipment down to the cellar and brought out the summer stuff. Put some air in the bike tires. Began thinking about what I plan to do with the yard this year. Do I take down the holly hedge out front? Do I dig up the entire back yard to start from scratch? So many choices. So many decisions to make.

And of course, since my ear is still sort of recovering from a bit of cancer surgery, I'm thinking very carefully about sun exposure these days. Isn't getting older fun?

comments
