Prophecy II
Jul. 23rd, 2005 08:19 pmPerhaps I should start here by defining what I mean by prophecy.
To me, prophecy does not refer to visions, visitations or predictions of the future. Rather, it is simply hearing what I think of as "The voice of God." It may be God, or perhaps the universe itself, endlessly repeating off of the truths of the universe. Being a prophet means being able, however rarely and imperfectly, to pick this voice out of the background babble which fills your mind.
This noise consists of all of the thoughts, ideas and beliefs floating around in your mind. Trying to pick out a single true word from the countless half-true, distorted, mistaken and simply wrong ones is very hard. I make it a point never to be certain that I have succeeded. True prophecies have a certain "ring of truth" to them. Most especially, they work. However, almost truths often ring true until you find the flaw. They often seem to work. Look at the history of science. It can take centuries to find the flaw. Prophecy works the same.
Thus, prophecy is a tool, just like the scientific method, for finding the truth. And it's just as tricky, but hopefully, just as self correcting.
More tomorrow.
