Philosophy
May. 31st, 2006 04:11 pmSure, it sounds like lots of fun - until yo have to take a test.
Have I mentioned that I really hate Plato? It doesn't matter since that was over a couple of weeks ago. Have I mentioned that I also hate Aristotle? We have our test on him tonight. And then there's Rousseau. Not only does he punch my "I-hate-long-winded-philosophers-who
think-they-understand-stuff" buttons, but he also punches my "clueless-Euro-centric*-self-
appointed-expert" buttons with his painfully shallow and ignorant notions about various native peoples. I have to keep reminding myself that he only had the reports of travellers and explorers, none of whom were trained anthropologists or ethnologists, to go by. Heck, the highly educated and carefully trained Jesuit missionaries who actually went and met these peoples didn't really do much better. Too much Euro-centric preconception.
Next comes Marx and finally Thoreau. The only cool part about Marx is that the ladt who sits in front of me comes from Czechoslovakia - she can't wait to compare an English translation by a non-communist with the official Czech communist material she grew up with.
