Word From the Soldier
Jul. 4th, 2006 07:35 amEric called last friday. He finally was able to give me his mailing address which is almost moot since he also gave me his email address. Still, I think the odd bit of snail-mail might be more cheering than just e-mail, so I'll try and send him something hard now and then.
The base commander decided that Eric and the rest of the guys who's training is being delayed will not spend the intervening weeks and months doing details (since he's already got troops on hand for that,) so instead, they are going to be taking college courses. This is a wonderful thing.
Meanwhile, Eric has begun considering joining the FBI after his hitch. Seems a wierd choice, but what the heck. From age four to fourteen, Eric never once changed his mind about wanting to be a paleontologist. In the five years since then, he's wavered and waffled a bit. I still suspect he'll continue to find the Army congenial and might opt for officer training. If not, who knows where he'll end up? And who cares, asa long as it's good, honest work which makes him happy.
