So since no one wanted the concert tickets, I asked my friend Pat and we went.
It was pretty good actually - especially if you're a fan of bagpipes and/or early Sun Records artists and/or early Beatles.
You see, the concert was a benefit for the New Hampshire Firefighters' Professional Association, so before the show, we were treated to a few songs by the New Hampshire Firefighters' Pipe and Drum Corps. Not bad actually. It took me half a verse to recognize "America the Beautiful" and I've never thought "Amazing Grace" suits the pipes, but they did a good job and ended up with a couple of the bagpipe standards - I don't know the names but they're old ones and intended to be played on bagpipe - very impressive.

Then came the opening act, a guy from Memphis, Tennessee named Andy Childs. He sings and plays guitar very well. He did songs by various early Sun Record artists like Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash and so on. His act consists not only of doing the songs of these folks but diong them in pretty good imitations of their voices. He did some other things too by singers who had influenced him musically, like Kenny Loggins "House At Pooh Corner" and "Danny's Song." I do wish he'd done a couple of pieces as himself. But my favorite was his duet of Elvis and Willie Nelson on "You Were Always on My Mind".

Finally came the featured act: 1964 the Tribute. Older Beatles stuff done by four guys from Liverpool who sort of resemble the Fab Four - an impression more than actual looks. The outfits, haircuts, mannerisms and banter were excellent, which is probably why they've been travelling the world doing their act for 23 years.

I think the best part was seeing and hearing the music as it was written to be performed - live on stage, interacting with an audience instead of in a studio. It made music I'd grown tired of 25 years ago sound new and fun again.

Yes, I enjoyed myself. Of course, it also reminded me of why I don't do a lot of concerts or clubs. Too damn loud. I usualy listen to music turned down to where I can just make out the lyrics. I came out of the concert with my ears ringing - and my earlier tinnitus had faded to where I rarely noticed it anymore.

Still, overall a very good night. Pat likes going to concerts and seemed to really enjoy herself. And that's as important as anything.
