New Glasses

Part of the benefits package at UNH includes eye care. At Pearle Vision, we get a $10 eye exam once a year, or every other year, something like that. We also get a 35% discount on new glasses. Since my old glasses are pretty badly beaten up and my eyes have gotten worse, I got new glasses.

On the one hand, they seem to correct my vision to 20/20 for distances more than 3 feet or so. I was amazed, driving home with my new glasses on, just how poorly I've been seeing for years. I was happily reading signs from further away than I've been able to for god knows how long. I had to keep reminding myself to keep my attention on the road.

On the other hand, for details closer than three feet, my old glasses or no glasses work best. The optometrist had said I could opt for bifocals, but why bother? I'm fine like this. I can see!

There's that, too. But mostly, my eyes don't like distractions at the edge of my vision. With new glasses, it always takes a while to get used to where the new frames are.

Getting old doesn't bother me as much as failing to get old would, though I'm not quite to the point where each day survived is an accomplishment.

Bifocals take considerable getting used to. Neither of us actually fell down the stairs in the process . . .

Cool. I'll be heading that way tomorrow, hopefully to get myself some new specs too.
