Two More Days
Dec. 14th, 2005 03:52 pmand then vacation. Three and a half weeks of doing pretty much nothing except recovering from surgery and trying to get caught up on Sluggy Freelance.
In other news, one of the cooks at work is retiring and her replacement showed up today for training. It's one of the women I worked with before I got transferred. One by one, all of the good workers are being taken by the new dining hall. This, in fact, is policy. I finally cornered the guy responsible for my transfer yesterday and that's what he told me. "We need all of the good people here." Never mind that this means that the smaller units which have less margin for anything get stuck with the malcontents and second raters, making them even less effective. Never mind that it means they are hurting morale among those who were happy where they were and thus are less effective in the new place. I'm certainly not working as hard here as I was before.
Argh! Big business thinking is so screwed up. My old place had the highest customer satisfaction rating of the three dining halls last year. Partly that was because we had a good team (now being broken up.) Partly it was because we were a smaller unit. With only about a third as many customers, it was easier for our people to establish personal contact with the students - get to know them as individuals. It's like the difference between the corner store where you know them and they know you, and Walmart where the customers and employees are all just faceless numbers. (Sailor Jim excepted, of course.)
Enough. On to more interesting things.
