The Joys of Home Ownership...
Aug. 4th, 2006 05:35 pm... are complicated by being in a condominium. My place is half of a duplex condo. The other half is owned by a photographer who decided she didn't want to live there after all and is renting it out.
So the people who are renting are not bad - kinda white trash, but nice white trash. (Or maybe I'm just too suburban-boy whitebread.) Anyway, they're okay, but the neighbors beyond them, they are true white trash. So one of the little creeps has been know to climb the fence between our yards and up onto the roof of our one-story add-on out back. Since this requires a leap of about three inches, it isn't hard. But no one wants him up there. The point of the fence is to keep people out, not give them a leg up.
Then, a couple of weeks ago, he got into our garage and spray-painted stuff. Nothing important, you understand, but there's stuff a kid could get hurt on as well as stuff I don't want anyone messing with. At first, he got in through the door because someone left it open. I think the dad next door was painting his daughter's bike which is also where the spraypait came from. So I have been making sure (as usual) that the garage door is locked. Then I find the windows open. And the folding stair to the garage attic down and certainly no one should be up there as that's where the other owner and I have some excess stuff stored. So up with the stairs and hope he's too short to reach and too dumb to figure out how to extend his reach.
And today, my daughter noticed that the shed which is attached to back of the garage now has a hole leading into the garage! Hammer and nails time though I'm not sure it'll help. I've told the renters that if they see him in the yard again to just call the cops on him. And to get in touch with their landlady and have *her* get in touch with *me* as I think there are some issues which should be discussed.
I will never, ever, ever be a landlord. Have roommates, maybe. I'm thinking of making this place into a retirement commune if I don't sell. Don't laugh, look at conditions for the elderly these days. Communes might be the way to go.
